Empowering Women Through Self-Help Groups

The Challenge We Set Out to Solve

In rural Sonbhadra, access to resources, education, and economic opportunities remains severely limited for marginalized communities. Families often struggle with unemployment, lack of skills, and limited awareness of government schemes that could improve their lives. MKF Foundation identified these gaps and set out to create programs that address them at their root.

"The true measure of any society can be judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable members." — Mahatma Gandhi

Our Approach

Our strategy is built on three pillars: capacity building, community engagement, and sustainable impact. Rather than providing one-time aid, we invest in long-term programs that equip individuals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to transform their own lives.

Key Activities

  • Conducted 12 skill development workshops reaching over 400 participants
  • Established 5 self-help groups with collective savings exceeding ₹5 lakhs
  • Organized monthly health awareness sessions in 8 villages
  • Partnered with local schools to provide digital learning tools to 300+ students
  • Trained 50 farmers in organic composting and drip irrigation techniques

Impact on the Ground

The results have been encouraging. Women who were once dependent on daily wage labour now run small businesses, earning a stable income. Children from marginalized families are scoring higher in school, thanks to after-school tutoring and scholarship support. Farmers report improved crop yields and better market prices after adopting organic practices.

Perhaps most importantly, communities are beginning to take ownership of these initiatives. Local leaders have emerged, self-help groups are self-managing, and parents are actively participating in their children's education. This shift from dependency to self-reliance is the true measure of our success.

Looking Ahead

As we move into the next phase, MKF Foundation plans to expand these programs to 10 additional villages, launch a youth entrepreneurship incubator, and establish a community health worker training program. With continued support from donors, volunteers, and partners, we are confident that sustainable, community-driven change is not just possible — it is already underway.
